Pilates is a comprehensive body-centered exercise system that was created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It is designed to improve body posture, flexibility, strength, balance, and breathing, while also reducing stress and enhancing body awareness. The core idea of Pilates is to control the movement of the body through conscious, precise, and fluid movements. By emphasizing central stability and building strong core muscles, Pilates can help improve body alignment, reduce back pain, and enhance athletic performance. Pilates exercises can be performed using specialized equipment or just a mat, making it a versatile and accessible exercise modality for people of all ages and fitness levels.
The Hong Kong Physiotherapy Concern recently organized two Pilates Taster Workshops at the HKMU Physiotherapy Center to increase students' understanding of muscle strengthening exercises and to spark their interests in Pilates. The workshops, held on March 11 and 18, featured guest speaker Ms. Edith Lui, a senior physiotherapist at the center. She introduced the background, principles, and benefits of Pilates to physiotherapy students from different institutions. Participants had the opportunity to practice basic Pilates movements under the guidance of the instructor and design exercise classes for different patient groups.
The workshops were a great success, providing participants with hands-on experience and a basic understanding of Pilates exercises. They learned valuable physiotherapy skills and gained insight into how to apply Pilates exercises in a clinical setting. Overall, the workshops were a valuable learning experience for all involved and will help prepare future physiotherapists to provide the best possible care for their patients.
Pilates is a body control-based exercise designed to strengthen the core muscles and improve body posture. In addition to being a fitness exercise, Pilates is also widely used in physical therapy. This exercise strengthens the core muscles, including the muscles of the lower back, hips, and abdomen. These muscles are important components in supporting the spine and body posture. Through Pilates exercises, these muscles can be strengthened, thereby reducing the burden on the spine and joints and reducing pain and discomfort.
To let students understand more about the Pilates exercises and the principles behind them, and to enhance their understanding of the different therapeutic techniques of physiotherapy, the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Concern Group organized a Pilates workshop on 1 April this year at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, inviting professional speakers to explain and try out the exercises. On that day, we were honored to have Mr. Edwin Ng, a physiotherapist currently working in the Rehabilitation Clinic of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, to introduce the principles and key points of Pilates exercise to physiotherapy students from different institutions. The participants were invited to play the role of physiotherapist and patient to practice the skills of clinical physiotherapy diagnosis. At the end of the workshop, participants could try out various basic Pilates exercises under the guidance of the instructor to experience the benefits.
All in all, the workshop was very beneficial in enhancing the participants' understanding of Pilates exercises and learning a lot of physiotherapy skills.
